The 4th International Conference on Understanding the Global South: Transition and Transmission on May 17, 2025
The term ‘Global South’ has become a new agency in the changing world today as it has been an evolving space for resistance, innovation and transformation. Although the very emergence of Global South has been often quoted as a reaction to the cultural and political imposition by ‘the dominant force’ that determines and regulates world politics and media discourses in many ways, Global South still seeks to assert its right of self-determination, economic cooperation and continual resistance to neo-colonialism. The countries, communities and societies which are located within the broader spectrum of ‘Global South’ continue to contribute and attempt to shape and alter the public discourse on equity, sustainability and justice. In this context, Global South offers a framework for understanding the global inequality, developmental struggles and aspiration for a more equitable world order. Literary productions of late 20th century and early 21st century have underlined this phenomenon of change, and writers, critical thinkers, political philosophers and theorists who have been engaged in this process have articulated ‘this shift’ in global understanding and asserted that the emergence of ‘a new world order’, which is set to question and upset ‘the established’ order of political supremacy, has become an inevitable point in history. The conference ‘Global South: Transition and Transmission’ will provide a platform to expand discussion on cultural diversity, indigenous knowledge, intellectual movements and cross cultural interactions by presenting perspectives and priorities on poverty elimination, health care, quality education, social justice, climate change, sustainable development goals, biodiversity, Identity construction and alternative models of progress.
The conference proposes to investigate the issues related to cultural, literary and political engagements among and between the nations located in the geography of Global South, and the reflections of such engagements dominating public and literary discourses which challenge the constructed literary paradigms and offer to us ‘alternative histories, languages and different ways of understanding’. The specific focus of this conference will be on the diverse and dynamic literary traditions of the Global South that engage with the themes of decolonization, migration, indigenous storytelling, ecological crisis, and digital literary forms. These narratives intersect with the questions of race, gender and power and bring to the centre historically marginalized geographies by transcending the borders and binaries and celebrating multiplicity of perspectives that define ‘Global South’.
We invite the scholars, teachers, academicians across disciplines and researches to contribute not only to the discussions on how Global South gets reflected in literature, but also on how it continually reshapes the global literary landscape. Through critical dialogues, creative expression and interdisciplinary engagements, this conference proposes to amplify voices that envision new futures beyond colonial and imperial legacies.
