Queer(Ing) Early Modern Art
Universities Art Association of Canada (UAAC) Conference 2025 October 16–18, 2025 - York University, Toronto, ON Queer(Ing) Early Modern Art [Panel Session]This session seeks to bring together scholars interested in the representations of trans and queer desires, bodies, identities, performances, cultures, and resistances in early modern visual works and texts. The aim is to investigate: 1. the intersections of gender and sexuality with race, class, religion, and ability in early modern art and how these intersections complicate our understanding of trans and queerness. 2. what queer scholarship and framing can reveal about early modern works and/or how later queer artworks, films, and texts reinterpret and remediate early modern works. Topics may include but not be limited to:
homoerotic desires
queer spaces and temporalities
de/colonization and trans and queerness
queer and trans BIPOC representations
non-Western approaches to trans and queerness
queerness as disruption of social hierarchies
hagiography, embodiment, and gender fluidity
