Call for Submissions: Living in Languages Journal

The editorial team of Living in Languages invites submissions of creative and critical works for our upcoming issue. Living in Languages is an open-access, peer-reviewed online journal devoted to translation in its broadest senses—literary, cultural, political, and aesthetic. Founded at the State University of New York at Albany as a collaboration between the Departments of English, and Languages, Literatures, and Cultures, the journal is now supported by an expanded network of scholars from multiple universities and departments, maintaining its multilingual, interdisciplinary mission.
We welcome:

  • Literary translations (with both source and target texts),
  • Creative works that engage translation as method or theme,
  • Critical essays exploring translation across contexts—textual, visual, sonic, or embodied.

We are particularly interested in work that interrogates:

  • Translation as reading, interpretation, and ideology,
  • The politics of adaptation, assimilation, and cultural transmission,
  • Translation’s roles in maintaining or subverting hierarchies of power,
  • Migratory crossings and diasporic negotiations,
  • Colonial, postcolonial, and decolonial forces shaping language and meaning.

We encourage submissions that traverse disciplinary boundaries and that challenge conventional understandings of translation—whether as practice, metaphor, or theoretical framework.

All submissions must be made through our online portal: https://scholarsarchive.library.albany.edu/liljournal/.

Format/ Font:

MS Word in MLA 9th Edition. All work must be original and unpublished. Any literary translations must include both source and target languages in addition to any necessary authorial and/or publishers’ consent. An acknowledgment shall be sent upon receipt. Any suggested revisions by the editor and peer reviewers must be returned in two weeks without delay. Simultaneous submissions are not allowed.
