CFP on Philosophy and Theatre

Verona, November 20-21, 2025

Organized by S. Bigliazzi, A. Stavru, E. Stelzer, G. Ugolini

The SKENÈ Research Centre organizes a conference on Philosophy and Theatre to be held next November in Verona (20-21 Nov). We invite papers by scholars who in the past years have been publishing and/or organizing events on topics related to the intersection of philosophy and theatre.

The conference will investigate how dramatic texts and forms relate to specific philosophical topics ranging from Classical Antiquity to contemporaneity (such as mimesiskatharsispathosparrhesia/eironeia, dialogue/monologue, reality/fiction, pleasure/pain, joy/misery, life/death, truth/lying, space/time, body/embodiment etc.). We will also look at issues involving the theatricality of philosophy, such as performance theories, where theatrical performance is understood as a specific form of philosophizing.

Therefore, we welcome not only papers dealing with theatre from the viewpoint of Philosophy and Art, Aesthetics and Epistemology, but also proposals focused on philosophical issues encompassing Theatre Studies and Theatre Theory. We also look forward to papers dealing with global approaches to Philosophy and Theatre – including non-European and non-Western ones.

Invited speakers: Mauro Bonazzi, Laura Cull Ó Maoilearca, David Davies, Edith Hall, Alice Lagaay, Tzachi Zamir.

Depending on the number and quality of proposals, selected proponents will be either invited to Verona (for a 20-min paper) or to contribute to a volume that will gather the best papers presented at the conference as well as a selection of other contributions.

Please send us an abstract (max. 200 words) and a short CV (with a record of your previous work on topics related to the intersection of philosophy and theatre) by June 30, 2025.
