Call for Chapter Proposals (Updated)

We are pleased to announce that we have recruited some proposals for The Routledge Handbook of AI and Language Learning. To further strengthen the volume, we are now seeking additional contributions in two critical and rapidly evolving areas within the intersection of artificial intelligence and language education.

We welcome chapter proposals from researchers, educators, and developers that align with one of the following two thematic threads:

Thread 1: Foundational AI Techniques in Language Processing and Their Applications in Language Learning

This thread invites chapters that explore how core AI technologies—such as machine learning, natural language processing (NLP), and speech recognition—are being leveraged to support and enhance language learning. Topics of interest include (but are not limited to):

• NLP tools for vocabulary building and grammar development
• Adaptive language learning platforms and intelligent tutoring systems
• Chatbots and conversational agents in language education

Thread 2: AI in Composition Writing and Plagiarism Detection

This thread seeks chapters that examine the integration of AI in writing instruction and issues of academic integrity in language education contexts. We welcome both theoretical and applied contributions addressing:

• AI-powered writing support tools and feedback mechanisms
• The role of generative AI (e.g., ChatGPT) in second language writing
• Detecting and addressing AI-generated or AI-assisted plagiarism
• Empirical studies or classroom-based implementations

Submission Guidelines

• Abstract: 200–300 words describing the proposed chapter’s theory/framework, contributions, and structure
• Author Bio: 50–100 words per author (up to 2 authors per chapter)
• Proposal Deadline: Aug. 31, 2025
• Full Chapter Deadline: March 1, 2026
• Chapter Length: 7,000–9,000 words

We encourage global and multilingual perspectives beyond English and especially welcome critical engagement with the ethical, pedagogical, and technological implications of AI in language learning. This handbook aims to serve as a comprehensive reference for scholars, educators, ed-tech developers, and policy makers at the forefront of this rapidly transforming field.
