You Are What You (Don't) Read: Vegetarian and Vegan Characters in Literature

What kinds of vegetarian/vegan knowledges do we need now? Following the work begun by scholar-activists such as Carol J. Adams (1990) and Laura Wright (2015) and expanded in recent works such as--and pardon the abbreviated list!--Quinn's Reading Veganism, Savvas' Vegetarianism and Veganism in Literature from the Ancients to the Twenty-First Century, and Bulleid's Vegetarianism and Science Fiction, this panel aims to add to the ever-growing body of texts that include vegetarian/vegan characters or conversations about meat-free diets and philosophies. This panel eagerly accepts works (novels, short stories, essays, poems, memoir, etc.) from any time period and any geographic region.

Please submit a 250-word abstract via the following link https://samla.ballastacademic.com/Home/S/19407. Notifications will be administered through the Ballast system. Abstracts will be considered until September 1. Accepted panelists will participate in SAMLA 97 Knowledge to be hosted in Atlanta, GA, at the Wyndham Atlanta Buckhead Hotel & Conference Center from Thursday November 6 through Saturday November 8.
