Auteur Series: David Lynch
David Lynch’s death in January 2025 fixed his life, legacy, and body of work in concrete terms, seemingly at odds with his free and fluid approach to artistic expression characterized by limitless inspiration and interpretation. Only the end of his life could render his work ‘complete.’ But if death is not an ending, then where is, and wherefore, the filmmaker who no longer makes films? Where and how does his influence persist? Such questions of presence, absence, and transformation are prefigured, in some ways, by notions Lynch explored in his work and public comments: The Lynch who claimed, when promoting Lost Highway, that ‘death in my mind isn’t a finality’ and whose monumental Twin Peaks project returned, time and again, to paths toward perfection and numbers of completion, which temporarily settled the story world but never ushered in an ultimate stability. The popular image of the filmmaker, meditative and enigmatic as he slyly evaded giving too-direct answers about the meanings of his artistic output, serves the practical function of sustaining the mysteries therein. He is dead, yet his work lives. For the inaugural edition of Caméra-Stylo’s Auteur Series section, spotlighting David Lynch, we seek contributions relating to the concept of his ‘complete works’ as described above. While the Auteur Series layout will include standard features such as biographical information and a timeline of the filmmaker’s productions and releases, contributors are invited to propose articles, video essays, or creative work that examine Lynch (as a filmmaker, visual artist, and musician) from a variety of perspectives relating to the theme. Potential topics might include: -Numbers and order, including ‘numbers of completion’ -How paratexts (such as home video supplements) complement the primary texts -The function of fan engagement in sustaining Lynch’s body of work -Lynch and transcendence -Tracing a single theme, object, or performer across the filmography -Reflections on the recent auction of Lynch’s possessions and their significance -Lynch’s incomplete/unproduced works -A critique of totalizing explanations of Lynch and his narratives/images/sounds -How sound contributes to or ‘completes’ the visual storytelling in Lynch’s films/shows -Deaths among the cast and crew members of Twin Peaks: The Return Submit your 300–400-word proposals to Tommy Britt at tbritt@gmu.edu by November 1, 2025. Please include your name, affiliation, contact information, and a short biography.
