The Claude McKay Society (CMKS), now  an author member society in the American Literature Association (ALA), will convene one or two panels at the ALA conference at the Palmer House Hilton in Chicago, May 20-24, 2026. Harlem Renaissance author McKay is presently enjoying a healthy resurgence. In September 2025, Yale University Press published McKay's Letters in Exile: Transnational Journeys of a Harlem Renaissance Writer. Several letters were excerpted in The Paris Review, and the collection earned a Kirkus Reviews starred review. In December 2025, the University Press of Mississippi will publish Charles Scruggs’s Real and Imagined Worlds: Claude McKay’s Poetry and Prose, which considers McKay’s writing in intertextual dialogue with Proust, Hemingway, and other major modernists. CMKS seeks proposals on any aspect of McKay’s writing (excluding his Catholic writing, the “angry” sonnets, and the French translations of McKay’s writing, topics that are already taken). Contact Gary Holcomb, holcomb@ohio.edu by January 9, 2026. Send a title, abstract, and biographical information.
