METAMODERN SPIRITUALITIES
We invite scholars in religious studies and related fields to submit proposals for chapters
that will contribute to an edited volume on Metamodern Spiritualities.
This volume will be the first of its kind to explore metamodernism as manifested in 21st century
religious/spiritual institutions, beliefs and practices. We seek contributions from
different disciplinary perspectives that critically adopt or adapt Vermeulen and Van den
Akker’s theory of metamodernism to contemporary religious/spiritual phenomena. We
welcome submissions that include, but are not limited to, theories and case studies of:
● Secular-religious entanglements that could be interpreted as metamodern oscillations
between (modern) grand narratives and universal truth claims and (postmodern)
deconstructions or relativizations of such absolute narratives and claims
● Spiritual movements that blend Euro-American beliefs and practices with beliefs
and practices from other global regions analyzed from a metamodern perspective
● Identities/affiliations such as “spiritual but not religious” and “nones” analyzed from
a metamodern perspective
● Cultural products that demonstrate a blend of modern naivety and postmodern
irony (“ironesty” or “serious playfulness”) in metamodern spiritual expressions
● Embodied and material dimensions of metamodern spiritualities
● Artistic and literary expressions of metamodern spiritual sensibilities
● The impact of digital media and culture on metamodern spiritualities
● Comparisons with other theories on post-postmodernism adjacent to
metamodernism (e.g., Eshelman’s Performatism), which reflect on what
religion/spirituality looks like in the era after modernity and postmodernity.
Submission Guidelines: Please submit your 200-300 word chapter proposal and an
abbreviated CV or a link to your profile page on your institution’s website to the editors
Dave Vliegenthart (dave.vliegenthart@maastrichtuniversity.nl) and Linda C. Ceriello
(LCCeriello@gmail.com), before 1 February 2026. The editors will inform applicants
of their decision by 31 March 2026. Authors of accepted proposals will be invited to
submit a ~7500-word chapter by 1 February 2027. They will also be invited to present
their chapter in a proposed conference panel on metamodern spiritualities in 2027-2028.
