A conference hosted by the graduate students of the University at Buffalo’s Department of Media Study

While last year’s Media Study conference asked us to imagine artistic and research creation during the world’s prescribed end, this year we imagine methods of existing, creating, and remediating beyond our present moment.

The graduate students of the University at Buffalo’s Department of Media Study are pleased to announce our 2026 graduate conference: Methodologies of Re-creation and Remediation. What forms can art and practice-based research take in the contemporary moment? How can out-of-date and “failed” technologies/methodologies find current use? What is the artist’s role in helping to recreate and form new worlds? Our conference aims to address these questions, thinking specifically about art-making and research methods that remediate times of crisis. We are particularly interested in projects and presentations from research-based practitioners working between creative and scholarly practice. Presentations can take many forms, including:

-   Academic Papers

-   Performance

-   Creative Writing/Poetry

-   Workshops

Some themes we are especially interested in:

-   Explorations on the form of remediation

-   Media archeological methodologies of future creation

-   Research and artistic creation as resistance 

-   Alternative forms of research

-   Environmental and ecopoetic approaches

To submit, please fill out the linked Google form and include an abstract of no more than 300 words that outlines what you plan on presenting. Selected participants will be given 15 minutes to share their work on the day of the conference.
