MLA 2027 Panel: New Trends in Teaching Spanish as a Foreign Language
MLA Annual Convention 2027
Los Angeles, California | 7–10 January 2027
This special session invites proposals that examine current challenges and emerging trends in the teaching of Spanish language, Hispanic literature, and culture in both university and secondary education contexts. We seek contributions that critically reflect on pedagogical practices in a rapidly evolving academic, technological, and social landscape, offering innovative, reflective, or praxis-oriented perspectives.
Proposals may address, but are not limited to, teaching approaches beyond the pandemic; hybrid, online, and flexible instructional models; the ethical and pedagogical implications of artificial intelligence in the language and literature classroom; the use of digital tools, social media, and multimodal resources; decolonizing the curriculum; curricular redesign and innovation; heritage language instruction; Spanish for specific purposes; literature in translation; the teaching of film, graphic narratives, and other media; new models of assessment, certification, and evaluation; community-based and experiential learning; and study abroad or virtual exchange programs.
We welcome submissions that combine theory and practice, present case studies, or reflect on the institutional, cultural, and political contexts shaping Spanish pedagogy today. Contributions from instructors at different career stages and educational settings are encouraged.
Proposals of 200 words may be submitted in English or Spanish.
Deadline: March 1, 2026.
