CALL FOR SUBMISSIONS FOR VOLUME 19 OF
Katherine Mansfield Studies
THE PEER-REVIEWED YEARBOOK OF THE KATHERINE MANSFIELD SOCIETY
PUBLISHED BY EDINBURGH UNIVERSITY PRESS
on the theme of
PLACING KATHERINE MANSFIELD

Editors
Dr Erika Baldt and Dr Gerri Kimber

Katherine Mansfield once wrote, ‘How hard it is to escape from places […] - you leave little bits of yourself fluttering on the fences - little rags and shreds of your very life’ (CL1, p. 122). Her journeys ‘From the other side of the world / From a little island cradled in the giant sea bosom’ (CP, p. 103) indelibly shaped the form and content of her writing, and the places that she visited and in which she settled throughout Europe exerted a lasting influence on her.
Following on from the 2025 Katherine Mansfield Society conference at the University of Birmingham, this volume of Katherine Mansfield Studies will re-examine the importance of place in Mansfield’s writings, while also asking: how do we ‘place’ Mansfield today? How do we situate her work in current critical conversations and against new scholarly debates? The editors invite contributions to volume 19, to be published in 2027, that explore these questions and the theme of Katherine Mansfield and place.

Subjects might include (but are not limited to):

•Mansfield’s association with specific places (Wellington, London, Fontainebleau, Germany, etc.)
•Mansfield, the city, and metropolitan urban experience
•Mansfield and suburbia
•Mansfield, the countryside, nature, and non-human worlds
•Mansfield, locality, and regional identity
•Mansfield, the Midlands, and D. H. Lawrence
•Mansfield, borders, and boundary-crossing
•Mansfield, home, and belonging
•Mansfield and travel
•Mansfield and impermanent or temporary residences (hotels, guesthouses, etc.)
