Feminist and Anti-Racist Citation
“Feminist and Anti-Racist Citation”
sponsored by the Margaret Fuller Society
Modern Language Association 2027 | January 7–10, 2027, Los Angeles
Citation—in the form of abundant allusions, quotations, footnotes, or other in-text discussions—is a hallmark of Margaret Fuller’s writing. Honoring this approach to narrative, which can emancipate us into a community woven of mutual respect (rather than some form of egotistical sublime), we invite papers that study women writers’ citation practices and/or citation ethics. Even in 2027, writing by those who have been marginalized continues to be systemically appropriated, discounted, dismissed, ignored, and/or erased. As Sara Ahmed reminds us in Living A Feminist Life (2017), citation ought to shape our own anti-racist practices as scholars, a call even more pressing in the current political climate. How might we respond to that call?
Submissions about Margaret Fuller are, of course, welcome, but proposals need not be limited to Fuller’s life or work. The Margaret Fuller Committee for Racial Justice encourages submissions to all panels to address anti-racist approaches to scholarship, pedagogy, and community engagement. Early career scholars are—as always—especially encouraged to apply. Please send 250–300 word proposals or questions to Mollie Barnes at mbarnes2@uscb.edu with “MLA 2027” in the subject line by March 20, 2026.
