This two day conference explores how sexual shame has been historically produced, regulated, circulated, and contested across different periods and social settings. Grounded in historical enquiry, it treats shame not simply as private feeling but as a social and institutional force that operates through institutional structures and everyday discourse. The event invites contributions that examine how sexual reputations are constructed, how moral boundaries are enforced, how silences are sustained, and how individuals and communities negotiate stigma. Bringing together scholars from across the humanities and social sciences, the conference prioritises work that engages directly with archives, historical texts, and historically situated methods. Through keynotes, panels, workshops, and a methodological roundtable, it provides a collaborative space to investigate both the structures that generate sexual shame and the practical challenges of researching it.
