This Special Issue of Fashion, Style & Popular Culture invites writers to examine Muslim fashion as a contemporary style system, across geographies, histories, semiotics, platform media, spiritual practice, sustainability, lived theology, futurity and speculative design. Muslim fashion as a contemporary style system is no longer a subculture or regional aesthetic; it functions as a globally distributed, multi-centred fashion episteme, spanning global contexts such as Gulf luxury, Indonesian mass markets, Turkish modesty, diasporic Black Muslim futurism, and digitally driven abayas. This system cannot be reduced to modesty discourse alone; it operates as a dense semiotic framework in which form, materiality, digital performance, religious interpretation and ethical production are embedded in the garment industries. As scholar Emma Tarlo writes: ‘Muslim dress cannot be understood as a single tradition; it is continually reworked across global contexts, markets, and meanings’ (2010).

In the mid-2020s, Muslim fashion has emerged as one of the most climate-aware sectors of global fashion, particularly within young Indonesian, Malaysian and Pakistani brands where Islamic ethical traditions centre on care and responsibility supporting slower production, and more sustainable alternatives to fast fashion. At the same time, Muslim creators on TikTok, Instagram, and YouTube are rapidly shaping shared styles and ways of dressing that travel across countries and cultures. As a result, Muslim fashion has become an important space where faith is lived and negotiated through everyday clothing choices, turning fashion into a practical site of religious decision-making.

For this Special Issue, we welcome submissions using a wide range of theoretical approaches, including empirical and ethnographic research, historical studies, theology and design perspectives, material culture analysis, cultural and media studies, and speculative and future-oriented work.

Potential topics include (but are not limited to):

  • Modesty, fashion and contemporary Muslim consumer realities

  • Muslim style and racialization

  • Muslim influencer culture/social media aesthetics

  • Muslim futurism/Muslim speculative fashion

  • Halal consumption and halal beauty

  • Muslim menswear and masculinity

  • Muslim fashion entrepreneurship and platform commerce

  • Islamic jurisprudence, ethics and design

  • Diaspora aesthetics/transnational movement

  • Sustainability in Muslim fashion
