The CCCC’s 2027 Convention (April 14-17, 2027 in Miwaukee, WI) invites us to “imagine and design” our preferable, potentially even preposterous, writing futures; this panel imagines those futures through place-based education (PBE). We rely on Miri Yemini et al’s 2022 definition of PBE as “an umbrella term for pedagogical practices that prioritise experiential, community-based, and contextual/ecological learning to cultivate greater connectivity to local contexts, cultures, and environments.” “Writing the World” invites abstracts for a roundtable that will consider place-based education in writing classrooms in pursuit of our preferably inclusive and socially just futures, resisting institutional demands to contain, regulate, and mediate authentic writing experiences.

The following prompts offer some potential approaches to the exploratory goal of this panel, though other perspectives are welcome and encouraged:

  • How does place-based thinking mobilize the possibilities for what teaching, research, and scholarship in writing studies can become?
  • How are we able to create writing environments that respond to shifting patterns of reading, attention and cognitive load (Arola, 2015)?
  • How can we make use of existing academic platforms to support writing and PBE in the  university setting?
  • How could partnerships with local ecologies or community groups through place-based education create new preferable futures for our writing students?
  • How does a place-based/ experiential writing pedagogy invite and honor translingual and transnational experiences and literacies?
  • How might place-based learning reframe writing curriculum objectives and ways in which we assess learning?

Submissions by Wednesday, May 21st, or questions, via email to Carla Caponegro (mihaelag@english.rutgers.edu) and Liz Decker (liz.decker@rutgers.edu
