The 123rd Annual Pacific Ancient and Modern Language Association (PAMLA) Conference will take place this November in Seattle, Washington, from November 12-15, 2026.

At home, in community, and in the classroom, multiple languages mingle through creative ways of languaging. This "Multilingual Practices and Pedagogy" roundtable invites brief, informal presentations (5-10 minutes) from a wide range of disciplinary approaches to pedagogy and research in order to promote reflection on the relationship between classroom practices and research methodologies, as well as to encourage cross-pollination among studies in linguistics, literature, visual culture, and multimodal storytelling, among other fields. After the round of presentations, the session is open to conversation and debate between participants and the audience.

Presenters are invited to explore the following questions: How does your pedagogy influence your research? How does your research inform your pedagogy? What are the multilingual texts, discourses, methodologies, and practices that we, our students, our community members, our family members, and others employ? How can juxtaposing a variety of narratives (ethnographic, fictional, autobiographical, visual, multimodal) featuring the linguistic practices of multilingual speakers create learning opportunities in and out of the classroom? How can applied and sociolinguistics methodologies help illuminate the political and cultural stakes of multilingual practices among fictional characters in literary texts? How can theoretical approaches traditionally applied to fictional narratives provide insight into storytelling by real-world multilingual speakers about their lived experiences and identities? These questions and others animate this proposed roundtable as a means to promote dialogue across disciplinary divides and a vision of academic activity that refuses artificial boundaries between teaching practice and research.

Please note that PAMLA members are allowed to present in both a traditional paper panel and at a roundtable session, as long as the presentations are substantially different. Even if you have already had a paper accepted at another panel, you can present on a different topic at this roundtable, for instance if you would like to talk about your pedagogy!
