Narratives of Displacement in Global South Literature
This panel seeks to explore diverse literary representations of displacement across Asia, Africa, and other regions of the Global South. As environmental crises, armed conflict, and socio-economic inequities re-shape contemporary Global South societies, how does literature invite us to reflect on experiences of displacement? Examinations of resistance and agency within narratives of displacement continue to be important in this context, alongside analyses of identity, belonging, memory, migration, or exile. Contributors may engage with chosen theoretical conceptions, such as Rob Nixon’s “displacement without moving” or Sara Ahmed’s “disorientation.” Decolonial and comparative approaches to literature are encouraged, as are engagements with notions of global, world, or postcolonial literature. By bringing together a range of scholarly perspectives on displacement and global literature, this panel deepens our understanding of agency, belonging, and mobility.
