Reflection is a key part of Community-Engaged Learning (CEL), but it is not always used in ways that fully support student learning. This panel will look at how reflection can be designed more intentionally to help students think more deeply about their experiences in community settings. Rather than simply describing what they did, students can use reflection to connect their experiences, academic learning, and larger social issues.

Panel contributors will share different ways of supporting reflection in CEL, including written, oral, group-based, and creative approaches. The session will focus on how reflection can help students better understand their own perspectives, question their assumptions, and think critically about issues such as power, privilege, and responsibility when working with communities. It will also explore how community voices can be incorporated into the reflection process to create more meaningful, reciprocal learning experiences.

The panel will also address some common challenges, such as how to guide students without limiting their thinking, and how to assess reflection in fair and meaningful ways.

We invite contributions that share innovative practices, critical insights, and practical strategies for designing and facilitating reflective learning in community-engaged contexts.
