This special issue will highlight new work in queer ecology that engages and extends concepts of queer time developed by theorists such as Lee Edelman, Jack Halberstam, Elizabeth Freeman, José Muñoz, Kathryn Bond Stockton, Carolyn Dinshaw, and others. Moving beyond investigations of sexual and gender diversity in nature—a central focus of queer ecological scholarship since its crystallization fifteen years ago—we seek to chart new directions in the field as queer ecology metabolizes the temporal turn in queer studies alongside of ecocritical reframings of time, historicity, and futurity. We seek essays engaging American texts from any period that articulate queer temporalities emerging from representations of, for instance, climate change, environmental crisis, ecological community and kinship, queer survivance, or non(re)productive, degrowth, or postgrowth futures. Since our aim is to explore queer ecological temporal imaginaries in the archive, we seek essays that ground their observations in readings of literary texts, rather than essays that primarily treat this subject in a theoretical register. Essays might engage with the following topics: • Queer temporalities of climate change • Queer temporalities of environmental crisis • Queer temporalities of environmental activism or resistance • Queer concepts of origins or endings (e.g., biological, speciological, ecological, climatological) • Queer concepts of futurity, (re)productivity, growth, or kinship • Temporalities of queer modalities of survival, survivance, or continuance • Temporalities of queer interspecies entanglement, community, sociability, or kinship • Queer time and environmental affect; queer affect and environmental time • Queer time and degrowth, postgrowth, or circular economies • Queer time and environmental senses, affects, erotics • Queer time and postcapitalist hedonism, consumption, desire Submissions of roughly 9,000 words (including endnotes and footnotes) should be submitted electronically at https://mc04.manuscriptcentral.com/dup-aml by January 7, 2027.
