It’s been twenty years since Susan Stryker’s groundbreaking The Transgender Studies Reader, which not only helped scholars across disciplines teach themselves the background to responsibly teach Trans Studies but also provided easily excerpt-able essays that were highly teachable. Twenty years ago, however, literature by and about trans individuals was limited almost entirely to autobiographies – an invaluable genre, of course, but limiting for literary scholars and instructors who also wanted to assign more formally complex literary forms that tackle these same themes (Stryker’s volume does include essays on creative texts but they are all about visual media). My hope for this panel is that panelists bring their one or two favorite literary trans texts *to teach* -poetry, fiction, and plays. What kind of course do you include it in? What kind of students take this course? How have they responded to your chosen text(s)? What kinds of strategies do you use to teach the text, and/or what kind of writing assignments accompany the text(s) on the syllabus? Ideally this panel would also then become a destination for other teacher/scholars at the annual conference who want to add diversity to what they assign but don’t have time to start from scratch.

Guidelines for Paper Abstracts (must be submitted to NeMLA link included in this CFP, do not submit abstracts to email, though questions to email are welcome).

Anyone may submit an individual abstract to a particular session. Abstracts are vetted by the session chairs. Membership is not required to submit an abstract, but if your abstract is accepted and you want to participate, you must A) become a member, and then B) register for the convention.

Submissions of paper abstracts are accepted from June 16 through September 30, and session chairs will confirm the acceptance of abstracts by October 16. Once notified, please confirm your participation with chairs by accepting their invitations.

Each abstract submission must include:

*A title of no more than 80 characters

*An abstract of 200 to 300 words

*A brief bio
