Congreso Estética(s) del Horror: Filosofía, Cine y Literatura.

En los últimos años, el terror ha experimentado una renovada visibilidad cultural. El éxito del cine reciente, la consolidación de una auténtica edad de oro de las series televisivas y la aparición de nuevas voces literarias, impulsadas también por el trabajo de editoriales especializadas, evidencian que el horror ocupa hoy un lugar central en el imaginario colectivo y mantiene una extraordinaria capacidad para dialogar con las preocupaciones estéticas, sociales y políticas de cada época.

Sin embargo, esta vitalidad cultural no siempre ha encontrado un correlato equivalente en el ámbito académico. Aunque en las últimas décadas los estudios sobre el terror han crecido de forma significativa, todavía persiste un amplio espacio para profundizar en sus implicaciones filosóficas y en los múltiples cruces entre el pensamiento, la literatura y el cine. Con el propósito de contribuir a este campo de investigación, el congreso Estética(s) del horror: filosofía, cine y literatura busca reunir a especialistas interesados en explorar las múltiples relaciones entre el terror y la reflexión filosófica, así como sus manifestaciones en la literatura y el cine. Nos interesan tanto los trabajos que analicen la filosofía del terror —sus categorías estéticas, éticas, metafísicas o políticas— como aquellos que descubran el terror dentro de la propia tradición filosófica, examinando la presencia de lo monstruoso, lo ominoso, el trauma o el horror en autores, problemas o corrientes del pensamiento, desde la Antigüedad hasta la filosofía contemporánea.

El congreso aspira, así, a constituirse en un espacio interdisciplinario de diálogo en el que confluyan perspectivas filosóficas, literarias y cinematográficas para pensar el terror no como un género marginal, sino como una herramienta privilegiada para comprender las inquietudes fundamentales de nuestro presente y de nuestra tradición intelectual.

El congreso Estética(s) del terror: Filosofía, cine y literatura dará la bienvenida a propuestas relacionadas con alguno de los siguientes ejes temáticos:

• Filosofía del horror/Estética del horror
• Horror e intermedialidad
• Horror y sociedad

El congreso está organizado por el grupo de investigación ESCON (Estética contemporánea: arte, política y sociedad) del Departamento de Filosofía y Sociedad de la Universidad Complutense de Madrid (España), por el proyecto UCM 2026 "Historia Conceptual del Tiempo. Crítica y Política" (PR10/26-32656), y por el Grupo Grite (Grupo de Investigacion en Terror) de la Universidad de Buenos Aires (Argentina), tendrá lugar los días 3 y 4 de diciembre de 2026 en la Facultad de Filosofia (edificio A) de la Universidad Complutense de Madrid.

Las propuestas de comunicación deberán enviarse a [congresoesteticasdelhorror@gmail.com] hasta el 11 de septiembre de 2026, indicando en el asunto del mensaje: “Estéticas del horror”.

Cada envío deberá consistir en un único archivo en formato PDF que incluya:

• Un resumen de la propuesta de hasta 300 palabras.
• Una breve nota biográfica del autor/a (máximo 150 palabras), con indicación de su afiliación institucional, en su caso.

Se aceptarán propuestas en castellano o en inglés.

Las comunicaciones tendrán una duración aproximada de 20 minutos. La notificación de aceptación será comunicada a los participantes antes del 30 de septiembre de 2026.

Rafael Carrión Arias es Doctor en Filosofía y Doctor en Teoría de la Literatura y Literatura Comparada. Es profesor en el Dpto. de Filosofía y Sociedad en la Universidad Complutense de Madrid (UCM) y miembro del Seminario Nietzsche Complutense. Es autor multiples artículos de investigacion, así como de dos monografías: “Historia de la literatura griega: los orígenes del método genealógico en F. Nietzsche” (Peter Lang, Nueva York, 2020) y “Batman and the Shadows of Modernity: A Critical Genealogy of Contemporary Hero in the Age of Nihilism” (Routledge/Taylor&Francis, London, 2025).

Fernando Gabriel Pagnoni Berns es Doctor en Artes y doctorando en Historia. Es profesor en la Facultad de Filosofía y Letras de la Universidad de Buenos Aires (Argentina), donde dicta cursos sobre cine de terror internacional. Dirige GRITE (Grupo de Investigacion sobre el terror) y el proyecto “Civilizacion y barbarie en el cine de terror argentino” y es autor de una monografía sobre la serie española de televisión Historias para no dormir (Universidad de Cádiz, 2020). Ha editado, además, volúmenes dedicados al bicentenario a los cineastas James Wan, Wes Craven y Dario Argento, al giallo italiano (University Press of Mississippi), al cómic de terror (Routledge) y sobre el terror báltico. Asimismo, dirige la colección Terror: Estudios Críticos (Universidad de Cádiz), la primera colección académica en España dedicada exclusivamente a los estudios sobre el género de terror.

Aesthetics of Horror: Philosophy, Film, and Literature

In-Person Conference

In recent years, horror has experienced a remarkable cultural resurgence. The success of contemporary horror cinema, the consolidation of what many have described as a new golden age of television series, and the emergence of new literary voices—supported in part by the work of specialized publishers—all attest to horror’s central place in the contemporary cultural imagination and to its enduring capacity to engage with the aesthetic, social, and political concerns of each historical moment.

Yet this cultural vitality has not always been matched by an equivalent level of scholarly attention. Although horror studies have expanded considerably over the past decades, significant opportunities remain for further exploring the philosophical dimensions of horror and the many intersections between philosophy, literature, and film. With the aim of contributing to this growing field of research, the conference Aesthetics of Horror: Philosophy, Film, and Literature seeks to bring together scholars interested in examining the manifold relationships between horror and philosophical inquiry, as well as its manifestations across literature and cinema.

We welcome contributions that address the philosophy of horror—its aesthetic, ethical, metaphysical, or political dimensions—as well as papers that identify horror within the philosophical tradition itself, examining the presence of the monstrous, the uncanny, trauma, or horror in philosophers, philosophical problems, or schools of thought, from Antiquity to contemporary philosophy.

The conference aims to provide an interdisciplinary forum for dialogue in which philosophical, literary, and film studies perspectives converge to explore horror not as a marginal genre, but as a privileged lens through which to understand some of the most pressing concerns of both our contemporary world and our intellectual tradition.

The conference welcomes paper proposals addressing (but not limited to) the following themes:

• Horror and Intermediality
• Horror and Society

The conference is jointly organized by ESCON (Contemporary Aesthetics: Art, Politics and Society), a research group within the Department of Philosophy and Society at the Complutense University of Madrid (Spain); the UCM 2026 research project Conceptual History of Time: Critique and Politics (PR10/26-32656); and GRITE (Research Group on Horror) at the University of Buenos Aires (Argentina).

The conference will take place on 3–4 December 2026 at the Faculty of Philosophy (Building A), Complutense University of Madrid.

Submission Guidelines

Paper proposals should be submitted to congresoesteticasdelhorror@gmail.com no later than 11 September 2026, with "Aesthetics of Horror" as the subject line.

Submissions should consist of a single PDF file containing:

• An abstract of no more than 300 words.
• A brief biographical note (maximum 150 words), including the author's institutional affiliation, where applicable.

Proposals may be submitted in English or Spanish.

Accepted papers will be allocated 20 minutes for presentation.

Applicants will be notified of the outcome of the review process by 30 September 2026.

Organizers

Rafael Carrión Arias

Rafael Carrión Arias holds PhDs in Philosophy and in Literary Theory and Comparative Literature. He is a Lecturer in the Department of Philosophy and Society at the Complutense University of Madrid (UCM) and a member of the Complutense Nietzsche Seminar. He is the author of numerous scholarly articles and two monographs: History of Greek Literature: The Origins of the Genealogical Method in F. Nietzsche (Peter Lang, New York, 2020) and Batman and the Shadows of Modernity: A Critical Genealogy of the Contemporary Hero in the Age of Nihilism (Routledge, 2025).

Fernando Gabriel Pagnoni Berns

Fernando Gabriel Pagnoni Berns holds a PhD in Arts and is currently completing a PhD in History. He teaches at the Faculty of Philosophy and Letters of the University of Buenos Aires (Argentina), where he offers courses on international horror cinema. He is the director of GRITE (Research Group on Horror) and of the research project Civilisation and Barbarism in Argentine Horror Cinema. He is the author of a monograph on the Spanish television series Historias para no dormir (University of Cádiz, 2020).

He has also edited volumes devoted to the bicentenary of Frankenstein; to the filmmakers James Wan, Wes Craven, and Dario Argento; to the Italian giallo (University Press of Mississippi); to horror comics (Routledge); and to Baltic horror. In addition, he serves as the general editor of Horror: Critical Studies (University of Cádiz), the first academic book series in Spain devoted exclusively to horror studies.
