Invitation to contribute: Women, Gender, and Protest: Transnational Activism and Movements of Resistance
We are seeking authors for chapters of a forthcoming book collection, Women, Gender, and Protest: Transnational Activism and Movements of Resistance, edited by Mehra Shirazi, Patti Duncan, and aman agah. This is a reference volume for Bloomsbury Academic Publishing on the topic of transnational feminist protest movements, and will be part of the series, Women and Society around the World, marketed as an accessible text for undergraduate college students, upper-level high school students, and public libraries. Chapters must be structured around specific world regions and each chapter should be approximately 10,000 words. The book will include the following chapters: Chapter 1: North America Chapter 2: Latin America and the Caribbean Chapter 3: Europe Chapter 4: Southwest Asia and North Africa Chapter 5: Sub-Saharan AfricaChapter 6: Central and East Asia Chapter 7: South and Southeast Asia Chapter 8: Oceania (Australia, New Zealand, Pacific Islands) This volume will offer readers a timely comparative framework for understanding feminist activism in multiple contexts around the world, to better understand how women and gender have been central to resistance movements globally. Each chapter should provide some historical background on women and gender in relation to activism in the particular region, as well as general social and political context, but the majority of the chapter should focus on contemporary examples of local protests, activism, and movements for justice. For example, you may choose to discuss Black Lives Matter as a global movement to protest racism, state violence, and police brutality directed at Black people and communities; transnational feminist responses to gender-based violence and #MeToo; and local and transnational movements for reproductive justice. While authors can select specific areas of focus, we ask that every chapter engage Indigenous communities and activism; queer and trans, LGBTQ+, or gender-diverse experiences and movements for justice; and disability justice. Exploring women’s activism and movements for justice in various social and temporal contexts will help readers make connections and identify strategies that will offer hope in the current political moment. References should be in Chicago Style author-date format.
