Call for Papers: Journal of Beat Studies #14
This is a final call for papers for the Journal of Beat Studies' 14th volume, welcoming new and renewed contributions on any Beat Generation or Beat Generation-adjacent relevant subject (including the New York School, Black Mountain College, San Francisco Renaissance, Umbra Writers Workshop, etc.). The journal is interested in essays that reconsider familiar figures, recover overlooked ones, and explore the connections as well as any frictions between these overlapping scenes and their legacies.
Submissions may take a range of approaches, including rigorous scholarship, essays built around a central provocation, creative essays, and pieces that revisit a writer or text from a new angle. We especially welcome contributions that consider questions such as: How might the impact and effects of the Beat Generation be more broadly considered? What has this field overlooked? Which figures or texts deserve further attention? How do these movements continue to shape contemporary writing and reading?
The journal is accepting completed, submission-ready essays only for JBS #14. Submissions will proceed directly to peer review, and contributors are asked to submit work considered finished.
Inquiries are welcome, including from those uncertain whether a given essay fits the issue's scope.
Submission guidelines:
Completed essays (not to exceed 9,000 words) and a current CV should be sent to either Ronna Johnson (Ronna.Johnson@tufts.edu) or Amor Kohli (akohli@depaul.edu) by September 15, 2026. Manuscripts should be in Times New Roman and follow the most recent MLA style guidelines.
