CFP: Proposed Panel for the Annual Conference of International Association
for the Study of Irish Literature, IASIL 2007
Immigration and the Irish Revival
This panel will examine the cultural impact of immigration on the Ireland of
the 1900-1930s. During that period of cultural and political change,
Irelandhad a vibrant Jewish community in addition to hosting other
immigrants of
various ethnic and cultural backgrounds. The Irish revivalist project
included such participants as, for instance, the scholar Kuno Meyer, or
painter and playwright Count Markievicz. Alongside the Abbey, the Irish
Theatre, and other Irish nationalist theatrical projects of the time, there
existed a Jewish Dramatic Society that produced plays in Yiddish and
English.
Papers are invited that consider the immigrants' contribution to the
emerging culture of the Irish state by examining autobiographical writings
by first and second generation migrants into Ireland, works of fiction,
theatrical productions, and literary translations published in Irish
journals. Some issues that the panel might consider are the questions of
ethnic identity versus national identity, patterns of cultural and
linguistic interaction between the host country and the incomers, and
changes in the Irish experience of immigration and the immigrants'
experience of Ireland.
