Obsidian III: Literature in the African Diaspora invites scholars from
all fields to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the independence of Ghana.
 The issue is set for publication in the summer of 2007. When Ghana began
the first African nation to gain it independence from England, it not only
set the stage for the liberation of Africa, but it precipitated cultural
changes across the African Diaspora and, indeed, across the globe. Essays
are solicited the literary and cultural legacy of Ghanaian independence in
Ghana, in Africa, in the African Diaspora and throughout the world. We
seek papers on individual works, authors and genres as well previously
unpublished creative works.

Possible topics might include but are not limited to:
How have other African countries benefited and/or borrowed from Ghanaian
independence?

What is the legacy of Ghanaian independence 50 years after 1957?

The cultural work of political literature in Ghana or in Africa;

The fiction and/or poetry of Kofi Awoonor, Ama Ata Aidoo, Abena Busia,
Kwesi Brew, Ayi Kwei Armah, Kofi Anyidoho, Kojo Laing, Kobena Eyi Acquah,
Ladw Wosomu and other Ghanaian writers;

The relationship among Anglophone, Francophone, Lusophone and African
language authors;

Original, previously unpublished fiction and poetry focusing on the theme
of Ghanaian independence;

How did the historical conditions of African independence inform African
studies and post-colonial studies?

The alliances and misalliances between national and ethnic identities in
Ghanaian and in other African cultures;

What is the legacy of W.E.B. DuBois=92 Ghanaian citizenship?

Repatriation: what should be the African citizenship rights of the
descendents of the Transatlantic Slave Trade?
