The Student Journal for Everyday Criticism (SJEC) is a new collaborative, peer-reviewed and freely-distributed quarterly academic journal dedicated to the publication of work in Critical Theory and Cultural Studies. Our primary concern is the intersection of Critical Theory and praxis: Does Theory inform one's perception of the everyday, and if so, in what ways? Does an understanding of Critical Theory lead to a better understanding of the world? Can the study of Theory lead one to effect change in the everyday? In short: What is Theory good for?

While Critical Theory and academics are oftentimes accused of existing within a space separate and distant from the mainstream, we believe that this disconnect must be resolved and that scholarly discourse must be brought into the fore and made accessible to all. Our methods of distribution (online and as a printed zine) will reflect this.

Topics we are interested in include, among others:
The intellectual and the public
Sex and gender
The democratization of the cultural industry
Structures of power and oppression
Aesthetics
Popular and official cultures

We encourage interested parties to submit 250-word proposals and/or abstracts for critical or creative pieces of 1500 to 3000 words to the SJEC Editorial Committee at sjec.ec@gmail.com. While we are primarily interested in work by current and recently graduated students, full consideration will also be given to pieces submitted by unaffiliated scholars.

Please note that submissions are always welcome on an on-going basis, however we are aiming for a publication date of 15 March 2010 for the first issue.
