Call for Papers: "The Ethnic and Racial Other in Scottish and Irish Writings"

43rd Annual Convention, Northeast Modern Language Association (NeMLA)
March 15-18, 2012
Rochester, New York, held at Hyatt Regency Rochester
Host Institution: St. John Fisher College
Keynote speaker: Jennifer Egan, 2011 Pulitzer Prize winner, A Visit from the Goon Squad

Board Sponsored. This session welcomes papers that examine the way Scottish and Irish authors depicted and reacted to the ethnic and racial Other in their writings (fiction, travel writing, and biographies), from the nineteenth century to the twentieth century. How did Scottish and Irish authors depict those who were ethnically and racially different from them? Did they sympathize with the latter because they were dominated by the same empire that oppressed the authors, or did the authors align themselves with the British Empire? Did the Anglo-Scots and Anglo-Irish react differently from Catholic Scots and Irish? If so, how and why? Interested participants can e-mail their proposals (300-350 word) to Suha Kudsieh at: kudsieh@gmail.com.

Deadline for submitting proposals is: Thurs. Oct. 13, 2011

Please include with your proposal the following info:
