Unity in Disparity: Cultural Connections on Heavy Metal (Book Project 9/24-11/30)
We invite proposals for our interdisciplinary book project (working title) Unity in Disparity: Cultural Connections on Heavy Metal. As fans of metal with scholarly interest, active research, and previous publications on Metal music, we see that there is a void in academically informed Metal Literature of a uniform presentation about how Metal is part of our global culture(s) rather than something in the periphery of society. We are putting together a collection of writings which address this issue and are looking for proposals which, individually and collectively, convey that Metal is, indeed, an important and meaningful part of our culture(s), rather than on its outskirts.
Among the preliminary contributions, we are considering a chapter on Metal in the composition classroom and another on the relationship between Metal and national pride. We have spoken with two presses and have interest from both. The timeline for publication will be between 2013-14, depending on contributor schedules and the final publishing schedule of the publisher we agree to work with.
If you are interested in submitting a proposal for a chapter, please send us your curriculum vita and a 400 word abstract. In your abstract, be sure to explain how your chapter would fit with the broad theme for the book. Contributors will be selected primarily based on the quality of the proposal and the relevance to the book's theme, rather than the author's previous work in the field. Deadline for proposals is November 30, 2012. We expect to notify contributors no later than January 4, 2013.
If you have any questions please feel free to contact either of us. We look forward to hearing from you.
