Eudora Welty Society: Eudora Welty and Multimedia

Long acknowledged as a master of the short story, Eudora Welty was anything but exclusive to other expressive forms. An accomplished photographer, an intimate correspondent, a playful interviewee, and a receptive audience member, Welty was thoroughly involved with communication and the arts. This panel proposes to explore the role of and engagement with multimedia in Welty's artistry—either on and off the page, through several mediums, across diverse representations, by way of mixed miscellanies, and so on. Embracing SAMLA's theme, "Sustainability and the Humanities," the Eudora Welty Society invites interdisciplinary, intertextual papers that seek to expand, update, upend, or blend the discursive models and frameworks around Welty's fiction and photography. Like Welty's affirmative and innovative eye, we are looking for a bricolage of integrative approaches, a welter of Weltys. Examples might concern jazz and the blues, television and film, photography and dance, decoration and design, performance, magazine, radio, old medias and new medias, etc. in Welty's art, influences, legacy, and life. We also encourage proposals on multimedia pedagogies or digital humanities for advancing and sustaining Welty studies in the interactive classroom. By June 1, 2014, please submit 500-word abstracts and A/V requirements to Jacob Agner, University of Mississippi, at jkagner@go.olemiss.edu
