Celebrates 50th Anniversary of Freedom Summer
October 20-21, 2014

This year marks the 50th-anniversary of the Freedom Summer Project, which began in Mississippi on June 15, 1964. The Mississippi Project established fifty “Freedom Schools” and registered over twelve hundred African Americans to vote. African American Studies and Mississippi State University invite scholars and students to come to the conference to give papers, present posters or any creative expression on any aspect of the freedom project.

Participants are urged to submit their 250-word abstracts by July 15, but no later than August 1. Proposals may be sent via email to with “Freedom Summer Conference” in the subject line. Please include an abridged Curriculum Vita or resume including your institutional affiliation and contact information. Students should indicate whether they are graduates or undergraduates.

The two-day conference will be held on the campus of Mississippi State University, located in Starkville. Participants traveling by air will book through Delta airlines, which flies into the GTR Airport in Columbus. Mississippi State University and African American Studies will provide FREE shuttle service to the Conference hotel.
