"Forms of Geopolitics, Geopolitics of Form" Panel (NAVSA 2015)

full name / name of organization:
Sophia Hsu and Lindsey Chappell

CALL FOR PAPERS
DUE FRIDAY 21 NOVEMBER 2014
FORMS OF GEOPOLITICS, GEOPOLITICS OF FORM

This panel seeks papers that consider how literary forms negotiate British identity through real and imagined global encounters. It aims to explore the degree to which literature crystallizes or fractures geopolitical relations (and vice versa). Potential papers might examine questions such as: What are the geopolitical contours of genre, scale, perspective, etc.? What are the textual architectures of imperialism, international relations, capitalism, cosmopolitanism, spatio-temporal networks, etc.? To what extent do literary forms transcend the local contexts of their publications to reflect the global realities of the Victorian experience? How does narrative encode geopolitical forms and even inscribe meaning onto the concatenations of geopolitical structures? By engaging recent internationalizing trends in Victorian scholarship, this panel not only will locate geopolitical encounters within literature but also will analyze the entangled adaptations of geopolitical and literary forms.

Interested parties should send one-page abstracts and one-page abbreviated CVs to Sophia Hsu (slh5@rice.edu) and Lindsey Chappell (lnc2@rice.edu) by November 21.

We will make decisions by November 24, a week in advance of the general NAVSA deadline of December 1. For details on NAVSA 2015, "Victorians in the World," see http://navsa.org/2014/10/29/cfp-navsa-2015-victorians-in-the-world-12114....
