Philament, the peer-reviewed online journal of the arts and culture affiliated with the University of Sydney, seeks submissions from postgraduate students and early-career scholars (up to five years since qualification) that explore the notion or thematic "Terror Australis."

Panic, apprehension, alarm, fear, dread: these and other relatives of terror have long infected Australian texts. Resisting demarcation, terror can be a protean sense, a chimerical substance, an uncontainable ill feeling, or an institutionalised technic—a form of disciplinary power.

Taking the name of a 1970s Australian horror/fantasy magazine, Philament 21: Terror Australis seeks to investigate historical and contemporary inflections of terror—from the topographical to the philosophical, the stimulatory to the pathological—in literary and cultural works of all kinds and origins.

While we are open to papers dealing with terrorism and contemporary geopolitics, we especially welcome submissions that focus on textual representations of terror, and speak to Australian, Australasian, or other kinds of "antipodean" terrors. Possible topics include terror and sexuality; space; myth; and indigeneity. Philament 21 hopes to challenge, complicate, reify, define, provoke, and revitalise the idea of an antipodean terror, or a "Terror Australis."

Philament publishes three kinds of content: Scholarly articles, Excursions, and Reviews:

Scholarly articles should be in English, limited to 8,000 words;

Excursions may include creative writing, images, poetry, or mixed-media works, up to 2,000 words;

Reviews: Please contact Philament to enquire about and obtain a copy of a review book.

Submissions should be original, not previously published, and not under consideration elsewhere. Submitted files should comprise text as an MS Word file, and images as TIFF files. Submissions must contain endnotes, and conform to Philament's styling requirements, as detailed on our Submissions page.
