The Illustrated Texts session welcomes papers as well as innovative or even illustrative presentations that interrogate the concept of illustration broadly construed. In addition to proposals that explore traditionally illustrated texts, this panel also invites proposals that question the illustrative nature of much of our own work. Does illustration "light up, clear up, or elucidate" our text as its etymology suggests or is it operating differently?

Given this year's keynote speaker and the conference theme, we would be also very interested in further examining the illustrative nature of digital humanities and computer-aided visualization of data, archives, and patterns in our research. In other words, for the 2015 conference, "Illustrated" can refer to any combination of image, figure, diagram, visualization, graph, infographic, table, and/or map with the textual. In addition to our own traditional or digital publications, types of "Illustrated Texts" to consider are alchemical tracts, emblem books, books of hours, scientific texts, moral subjects or series, or even theoretical/philosophical ones that 'diagram' their arguments. Proposals that interrogate the illustrated nature of periodicals, journals, newspapers, cartoons, graphic novels, websites, video games, as well as advertising are also very welcome.

We invite participation and lively dialogue among scholars from a variety of disciplines who work with illustrated texts, illustrate their own, or who think about illustration and the visual in relation to language. Please send abstracts of 250 words by April 5, 2015 to Christopher Martiniano at martinic@umail.iu.edu. We look forward to reading your proposals.
