Ethics and Affect II: Transformations
Romantics, Victorians and early Modernist writers and artists were successively called upon in their respective generations to challenge the social, aesthetic and ethical mores of their time in their work as well in their personal lives. This panel invites papers that explore not only how these aesthetic and ethical parameters shift and alter over time but also the short term reprisals and long-term rewards that often result when these boundaries are transgressed and/or when writers or artists and their creations take risks. Possible sub topics may include but are not limited to: gambling, success and failure, providential reward, ostracism and the sublime and the beautiful.
