Intégrité (pronounced IN tay gri tay) is a scholarly journal published twice a year by the Faith & Learning Committee and the Humanities Division of Missouri Baptist University, St. Louis, MO. Published both online (http://www.mobap.edu/integrite) and in print copy, it welcomes essays for a special issue (Spring 2016) on "Faith and Violence in Literature." Essays may explore the interaction between Christian faith and violence in individual works or writers, in issues concerning teaching such works and writers, and in the pedagogical tasks educators at faith-based institutions of higher learning face when discussing and reflecting on the use of violence.
Some possible approaches and examples include:
• The relationship and tension between faith and violence in the work of writers who explicitly examine it (such as Flannery O'Connor, C.S. Lewis, Marilynne Robinson, or Cormac McCarthy)
• Ideas of faith in war literature and/or film
• The relationship between faith and violence in the literature of oppressed and minority peoples, or the issue of faith used as a justification for perpetuating violence against them
• The question of how to approach violence in texts in the classrooms of faith-based colleges and universities, and the questions and discussions such texts might help students engage in
• The use of violent language as a rhetorical technique not only in literature but in other texts, such as political speeches and sermons, and how educators at faith-based colleges and universities can help students engage and critique such rhetoric
For this issue the journal also welcomes reviews of scholarly books published since 2010 that explore topics related to Christianity, literature, and pedagogy.
Essays should be 10-25 pages in length, and book reviews should be 5-8 pages. For citation style, refer to the current edition of the MLA Handbook for Writers of Research Papers. Articles should include in-text citations in parentheses, a list of endnotes (if applicable), and an alphabetical listing of works cited at the end. Proposals and abstracts may be submitted until October 15, 2015. Essays are due no later than March 1, 2016. Please send submissions as Word attachments.
