Cinematic Responses to E.U. Expansion (collection)

(DEADLINE EXTENDED: 1/10/06)

This collection seeks to explore how various European films and filmmakers
from Western and East-Central Europe as well as the Balkan states are
responding to the expansion of the E.U. and, more broadly, European history
following the collapse of communism. The collection asks: Is there a
totalizing or even coherent image of Europe that emerges from such films?
Moreover, how do we understand such films in light of the fact that one of
the reasons cited for the Dutch and French rejection of the E.U.
constitution is resistance to further European expansion, in particular the
 entry of Turkey into Europe?

Papers may focus on, but are not limited to, such topics and texts as:

-- Films that address the possibilities for post-war reconciliation in the
 former Yugoslavia

-- Representations of migration and otherness in various recent European
 films/ cinemas

-- Films that examine the cultural impact of Islam and Muslim migration
into
 Europe

-- Films that question the relationship between Turkey and Europe

-- Films from the former Eastern-bloc states and the Balkans that explore
the transition from communism to capitalism

-- Films that address the economic and social significance of shifting and
 collapsing borders between nations

-- Omnibus films, such as Visions of Europe, or documentaries, such as Die
Mitte, that examine the multiple processes related to European expansion

-- Multiple films from directors such as Fatith Akin or Michael Haneke
whose
work consistently engages with any of the above themes
