Discourse surrounding issues related to the transgender and feminist communities currently dominates contemporary cultural conversation globally. Against this backdrop, Femspec calls for submissions exploring speculative approaches to gender, and particularly to transgender identity and embodiment; the rise and use of what some liken to Orwellian doublespeak; and projections extrapolated from our present into the future. 

Femspec is an interdisciplinary, peer-reviewed feminist journal dedicated to science fiction, fantasy, magical realism, surrealism, myth, folklore, and other supernatural genres.  

The Western Literature Association permanent section invites proposals for in-person presentations at the 2023 meeting of the Pacific Ancient and Modern Language Association taking place in Portland, Oregon, from October 26-29. “Going Public” in Children’s and Young Adult Literature and Cultures

In conjunction with the conference theme of “Going Public: What the MMLA Owes Democracy,” this year’s Science and Literature permanent session invites papers which engage a related theme of “Democracy, Narrative, and the Natural Sciences.” In particular, it invites papers attentive to the scientific discourses moving through fictional texts as they reveal narrative and/or political commitments to democracy, equity, and justice. Submissions might engage but will hopefully not be limited by the following suggestions:

· Agricultural uplift in the works of Booker T. Washington and W. E. B. Du Bois

· Botanical and geographical metaphors for liberation in Black women’s nature poetry

SURPLUS is the keyword for the 2024 NeMLA convention for critical and creative work that, in addition to the commonly associated meanings of profit and value, can be more broadly construed as excess or excessive, as surfeit, or what is leftover, or unwanted: an excess of emotion (anger, fear, passion, desire), for example; or surplus time (leisure or its absence); or populations rendered "surplus"- migrants, the marginalized, the unemployed, the incarcerated.

Feminism has become the most controversial, most discussed and most contested subject in India’s current academic field. North East Indian feminism generally depended on Western feminism as well as Indian feminism frameworks. These two frameworks are diversely intricate from North-East India in term of race, class, caste, culture and religion, etc. Moreover, it is important to note that most Indian mainstream feminists are brought up in a specific cultural setting i.e. class, caste, religion etc. from various parts of India. ‘Indian feminist thought’ is a term that they coined through their own discourse.

To celebrate the dark depths of the city, PCAS welcomes papers or presentations that explore the monsters and the monstrous that roam the streets and psyches of New Orleans.

The panel invites proposals that highlight the contributions women directors, producers, actors, etc. have had on the their respective industries and the Latin American film canon.

“Queer Politics in Media and Legal Cultures”

In 2022, the Floridian Parental Rights in Education bill, commonly known as “Don’t Say Gay Bill,” heralded a new era of legal censorship specifically targeting LGBTQ persons. Later that year, Florida’s Governor Ron DeSantis punished the Walt Disney Company for publicly speaking out against the state’s increasingly hostile anti-queer stance. By dissolving Disney’s special status as an independent governing district, DeSantis retaliated for the company’s public criticism.

Both noun and verb, “environ” points to what’s “out there,” one’s milieu or surrounding world, the assemblage of human and more-than-human beings in which one finds oneself situated, as well as the activity of encircling an area to enclose, circumnavigate, or occupy it. So too, “queer,” as noun and verb, derives its original meaning from space, referring to something that is oblique, slanted, or off-center.
