RSA 2024 Chicago: Reading Lanyer Anew

updated:
Friday, May 26, 2023 - 4:25am
Renaissance Society of America
deadline for submissions:
Friday, July 14, 2023

Two volumes published in the late nineties—Susanne Wood’s notable monograph Lanyer: A Renaissance Woman Poet and Marshall Grossman’s edited collection Aemilia Lanyer: Gender, Genre, and the Canon—have largely shaped the trajectory of Lanyer scholarship. Following their lead, scholars in the past two decades have charted how Salve Deus Rex Judaeorum navigates intricate issues of gender, genre, patronage, courtly politics, religion, and poetic authority. This panel aims to expand this fruitful work by exploring new avenues for scholarship that consider Lanyer’s engagement with other contexts and discourses.

Queer & Trans Aesthetics panel at PAMLA 2023

updated:
Friday, May 19, 2023 - 11:52am
Pacific, Ancient, and Modern Language Association
deadline for submissions:
Wednesday, May 31, 2023

This session seeks to answer the question: in what ways do queer and trans writers revise and recreate established generic modes and forms (or fashion entirely new ones) to depict queer and trans stories? How are queer and trans writers (especially queer and trans writers of color, disabled writers, and the global working class) experimenting with genre and aesthetics to depict intersectional queer and trans experiences? In a time of unprecedented legislative attacks against queer and trans people in the United States, this panel turns its attention to the ways that writers work formally to tell the stories of queer and trans lives amidst ongoing social and legislative hostilities.

Feminism has become the most controversial, most discussed and most contested subject in India’s current academic field. North East Indian feminism generally depended on Western feminism as well as Indian feminism frameworks. These two frameworks are diversely intricate from North-East India in term of race, class, caste, culture and religion, etc. Moreover, it is important to note that most Indian mainstream feminists are brought up in a specific cultural setting i.e. class, caste, religion etc. from various parts of India. ‘Indian feminist thought’ is a term that they coined through their own discourse.

Approximately one year ago, on May 2, 2022, a draft decision leaked from the US Supreme Court confirmed what many had feared: that the highest US court was set to overturn the 1973 decision Roe vs. Wade and roll back protections governing women’s rights. Almost immediately after, appointment books and clinics began to close in multiple US states. This situation was far from isolated; in the U.K., for example, pandemic gains for women in access to early at-home abortion rolled back on August 29th, 2022. As these and other examples from around the world demonstrate, the present moment appears to be one of regression and regulation.

In 2022, the Floridian Parental Rights in Education bill, commonly known as “Don’t Say Gay Bill,” heralded a new era of legal censorship specifically targeting LGBTQ persons. Later that year, Florida’s Governor Ron DeSantis punished the Walt Disney Company for publicly speaking out against the state’s increasingly hostile anti-queer stance. By dissolving Disney’s special status as an independent governing district, DeSantis retaliated for the company’s public criticism.

Kazuo Ishiguro’s dystopian novel Klara and the Sun (2021) tells the story of an A.I.-powered “artificial friend” who serves as a companion to a young girl, Josie, a privileged child “lifted” in order to secure the best opportunities whilst resentful masses are left behind. Ishiguro’s novel extrapolates the economic and socio-cultural divisions that haunt our present moment to understand how digital technology engenders and exacerbates old and new socio-economic and cultural inequities, including access to education and medical healthcare.

Both noun and verb, “environ” points to what’s “out there,” one’s milieu or surrounding world, the assemblage of human and more-than-human beings in which one finds oneself situated, as well as the activity of encircling an area to enclose, circumnavigate, or occupy it. So too, “queer,” as noun and verb, derives its original meaning from space, referring to something that is oblique, slanted, or off-center.
