In Nicomachean Ethics and Politics, Aristotle conceived ethics and politics to be both interrelated and exclusively male endeavors. This notion continued to be influential in the early modern period (c. 1500 – 1800). Yet in recent decades, feminist scholarship has showed that throughout the early modern world numerous women nonetheless discussed, developed, and challenged politics and ethics in profound and often surprising ways.

Sitting with Discomfort and Bending Decolonial Mastery: The Affective and Transformative Possibilities of The LiteraryOrganized by Miriam Sbih and Flora Roussel Recent studies and pedagogical practices concerning the teaching of socially, politically, and emotionally difficult concepts (racism, colonialism, and sexism to name but a few) increasingly foster and deeply reflect on the implications of a vulnerable posture within the learners (Brantmeier; 2013). While these educational experiences can lead to emotional and physical discomfort for the person who confronts them, a vulnerable perspective allows us to overcome this initial discomfort and take advantage of it.

Scholars have turned to genre as both method and topic in recent years. It has arisen as a heuristic for literary sociologists, feminist critics and race theorists. At the same time, critics observe a so-called “genre turn” in the contemporary novel, noting that generic forms have begun to transgress into the domain of literary fiction.

deadline for submissions:

Carrie Paechter, in her article “Rethinking the possibilities for hegemonic femininity: Exploring a Gramscian framework” (2018)6, discusses the challenges and possibilities of conjuring a space where the discursive model of feminine essentialism can be better perceived as a binary opposite of hegemonic masculinity and patriarchal oppression. A few popular generic spaces within the mediascape, where machismo claims a front row within the psyche of the audience, have hitherto been dominated by male leads. Since the early 2000s, media representation has been witnessing a tangible shift with the emergence of female leads. The characters played by women started appearing more convincing.

Marginalized Women in American Historical Fiction

updated:
Thursday, October 6, 2022 - 7:31am
Indiana University of Pennsylvania
deadline for submissions:
Saturday, October 15, 2022

The creative work of historical fiction brings a prior time and place, one known but unfamiliar, into the present. Jerome de Groot considers one purpose of historical fiction is to “challenge the orthodoxy and potential for dissent [which will] challenge mainstream and repressive narratives.” Its characters and settings represent the cultural issues and struggles of their own time while also asking readers to recognize that many of the same situations still exist and need attention. The social and racial marginalization of women in the United States has been gaining that attention in popular culture outlets, including a recent Saturday Night Live cold open.

Though “posthumousness” takes a variety of forms, the texts within its ambit share a quality that Jean-Christophe Cloutier, in Shadow Archives, calls “a belated form of timeliness.” The editorial apparatus of posthumously published texts, such as Claude McKay’s Amiable with Big Teeth or Muriel Rukeyser’s Savage Coast, foregrounds these novels’ prior lostness and subsequent belated arrival in forms and contexts that their authors could not have foreseen.

On May 2, 2022, a draft decision leaked from the US Supreme Court confirmed what many had feared: that the highest US court was set to overturn the 1973 decision Roe vs. Wade and roll back protections governing women’s rights. Almost immediately after, appointment books and clinics began to close in multiple US states. This situation was far from isolated; in the U.K., pandemic gains for women in access to early at-home abortion will roll back on August 29th, 2022. As these and other examples from around the world demonstrate, the present moment appears to be one of regression and regulation.
