The Pauline Hopkins Society (http://www.paulinehopkinssociety.org) is pleased to announce its fifth bi-annual competition. The society will award the best scholarly publication – book, essay, or book chapter on Pauline Elizabeth Hopkins published between January 1, 2018 and November 1, 2022. If you have published an essay or chapter that discusses Hopkins and/or her work, we invite you to consider entering before the March 31, 2023 deadline.

Because entries will be judged through a system of blind review, we recommend that any self-citation, either in the body or in notes, be reworked to the third person.

This year the Latina/o/x Literature & Culture Society welcomes submissions focusing on diverse topics including literary genre, single authors, children’s literature, speculative fiction, comparative analyses, as well as cultural studies approaches. We also encourage a variety of theoretical and interdisciplinary prisms, and a variety of panel types, including traditional paper sessions, roundtable discussions, and sessions dedicated to the teaching of Latina/o/x literature.

ONE HUNDRED YEARS OF T.S. ELIOT’S THE WASTE LAND

The Kate Chopin International Society is seeking individual proposals for two sponsored panels
at the 2023 American Literature Association conference in Boston, Massachusetts, May 25–28,
2023.

The first panel, a roundtable on “Teaching Kate Chopin,” seeks short (seven- to eight-minute)
papers/remarks that address an aspect of or strategy for teaching Chopin’s life or work. Proposals
should include a title, your name and affiliation, and a paragraph about your proposed remarks.

The second panel seeks proposals relating to any aspect of Chopin’s life or work. Proposals for
presentations no longer than twenty minutes should include a title, your name and affiliation, and
a 200- to 400-word abstract.

New Directions in Davis Scholarship

The Rebecca Harding Davis Society welcomes proposals for two sessions at the next meeting of the American Literature Association. The conference will be held May 25-28, 2023 in Boston, MA.

We are interested in proposals that engage in any aspect of Davis’s work. We particularly encourage proposals that address some of Davis’s lesser known works, and we also welcome new readings of the canonical “Life in the Iron-Mills.”

Sneaker Studies: A Call for Papers

Sneakers have constituted one of the most significant cultural phenomena in recent history, and yet they have not garnered sustained attention by scholars of humanities and cultural studies. This project, an online sneaker archive will consider how specific shoes have become icons of their historical eras. This is a second call for papers this time with a more focused question.  We are interested in studies of specific athletes as pitchmen and their changing relationship with signature shoes or shoe lines. 

Canadian Review of American Studies (University of Toronto Press) is the leading American Studies journal outside the United States and the only journal in Canada that deals with cross-border themes and their implications for multicultural societies. Published three times a year, the journal aims to further multi- and interdisciplinary analyses of the culture of the US and of social relations between the US and Canada. CRAS is a dynamic and innovative journal, providing unique perspectives and insights in an increasingly complex and intertwined world of extraordinarily difficult problems that continue to call for scholarly input.
