deadline for submissions:
Thursday, February 20, 2025

This is a Call for Papers for a special issue of the online open-access double-blind peer-reviewed journal [Inter]sections, titled Laughing in the Face of Evil: Humorous Perspectives on Perpetrators in Contemporary American Literature and Popular Culture. We invite papers that ask what humor can contribute to our understanding of perpetrators by examining a selection of works from contemporary American literature and popular culture. Does humor help demythologize certain perpetrators whose international fame turned them into quasi-mythical figures? Can the ownership of humorous content about a traumatic situation or process endured by a specific marginalized community be transferred to other communities?

(What’s the story) Reunion glory?

Assessing Oasis’s legacy as Morning Glory turns 30.

Université Rennes 2 (France), 27 November 2025

Organisation committee: Aurore Caignet, Guillaume Clément, David Haigron

It is estimated that nearly 14 million people tried to get tickets for this year’s Oasis’s UK tour following the announcement of their reunion in 2024. This staggering figure echoes the band’s one-off concert at Knebworth in 1996, when 4% of the British population had applied for tickets. Such statistics confirm Oasis’s special status within British popular culture and the band’s ability to allow people to come together.

Galactica Media: Journal of Media Studies
deadline for submissions:
Saturday, March 15, 2025

Description

We live in a world where interfaces play an increasingly central role. Interfaces are our means of engaging with both technical and social realities; gradually, they become not only conditions of access to the world of technology but also intrinsic structures of our experience. The interfaces designed by major corporations, game developers, and social application creators set standards of perception and self-awareness, disciplining us and determining the measure of control. This makes it all the more crucial to continue experimenting with interfaces, developing a new semiotic, symbolic, and bodily grammar—a challenge embraced by digital artists, gamers, science fiction writers, and neuromancers of media reality.

A popular t-shirt claims the first Pride was a riot.

During a police raid on the Stonewall Inn on 28 June 1969, some customers fought back. Resistance continued for several nights. Whilst this may have inspired the first Pride march, it was not the first LGBT+ protest.

updated:
Friday, January 17, 2025 - 8:29am
BIMM, Sri Balaji University Pune, India
deadline for submissions:
Saturday, March 15, 2025

In contemporary media and pop culture, the intersection of fatness, queerness, and neurodivergent signifies a crucial but inadequately researched domain of identity and representation. The representation of marginalised identities is becoming increasingly significant as cultural spaces continue to impact social norms and impact perspectives. Media and popular culture have the ability to either reinforce stereotypes or contest the status quo by emphasising varied, nuanced narratives. The comprehension of the intersections between neurodivergent, queer, and fat identities offers valuable insight into the lived experiences of numerous individuals, thereby promoting inclusivity and empathy in a society that frequently marginalises diversity.

updated:
Friday, January 10, 2025 - 7:38am
Melissa Crofton/Florida Tech
deadline for submissions:
Wednesday, April 30, 2025

For close to nine hundred years, Gawain has been a favorite hero in Arthurian myth, especially when it comes to his appearance in the late fourteenth-century chivalric romance, Sir Gawain and the Green Knight. While scholarship on the poem continues to expand in many fascinating ways, David Lowery’s 2021 adaptation, The Green Knight, has changed the way scholars can approach and teach the medieval poem. The editors of this book proposal seek essays that explore some of the compelling changes Lowery makes to the base text of Sir Gawain and the Green Knight, and what we can learn about the importance—or dangers—of retelling popular stories in new and inventive ways.

CFP: Essay Collection on Sports Films

updated:
Friday, January 10, 2025 - 7:36am
Ciara Moloney and David Clare
deadline for submissions:
Monday, March 31, 2025

Despite its status as one of cinema’s most enduring and popular genres, complete with a rich history of narrative tropes, aesthetic conventions and character types, the sports film is more frequently analysed as a vehicle for the on-screen representation of sport than a distinct film genre. The representation of sport may be an identifying feature of the sports film, but in the way that horses are an identifying feature of westerns: a key part, to be sure, but film criticism would be much poorer if it elided the complexity of John Wayne’s performance in The Searchers to focus on the horse he rode. We seek abstracts for an edited collection reflecting the depth and breadth of the sports film as genre.
