We are hoping to organise an open-to-public seminar on "Cantonese and Education", which will take place on Thursday 28 November 2019 (tentative, venue TBA). We are looking for speakers to speak for 15 minutes about any aspects that relates to the theme.

Topics may include language, social and liberal studies classes, creative expression, global access, politics on campus, and more. The speakers will also be asked to give comments on others' presentations.

If you are interested in participating, please send a title of your short paper and some initial thoughts to Tammy Lai-Ming Ho (tammyh@hkbu.edu.hk) by Friday 1 November 2019.

In the midst of the election of the Trump administration, the growing racial tensions that coalesced into the violent protests in Charlottesville, and the rising rates of hate crimes committed against black and brown individuals, there has been a slew of young adult novels published by writers of color that tackle the ways in which young people within these communities must simultaneously navigate the complexities of childhood while also confronting racism, xenophobia, homophobia, and police brutality.

We invite paper proposals for a British Academy funded interdisciplinary symposium on the concept of attention, to be held at the University of Nottingham School of English on the 3rd December. The symposium has three aims:

1. To allow researchers who work on similar questions from different disciplines to interact for the purpose of developing future collaborations and networks;

2. To provide a training opportunity for ECRs in engagement and outreach, allowing participants to practice bringing the specifics of their research to bear on an issue of public concern (attention);

The Great War had ended and women had won the right to vote, but 1919’s Red Summer and Palmer Raids signalled lingering social discord. Results from various organizations indicate that people who are incarcerated generally have lower formal education than people who have not been incarcerated.
