The conference, Educating the Global Citizen – International Perspectives on Foreign Language Teaching in the Digital Age, takes place on 25th – 28th March 2019 and is inviting paper submissions.
In times of rapid and unprecedented global sociocultural change, urgent calls are being made for salient educational responses to current global and digital challenges. Such calls are being met in (re)formulations of global (citizenship) education, sustainability education, and service learning, which endeavor to promote a democratic and human rights culture in schools and the larger community.
Submission deadline extended to December 1, 2018.

Queen City Writers is a refereed journal that publishes essays and multimedia work by undergraduate students affiliated with any post-secondary institution. We are currently seeking submissions for upcoming issues; we operate on a rolling deadline basis and will consider students’ works as we receive them.
World literature has a tremendous capacity to broaden literary canons, but, when taught without a focus on translation, can succumb to cultural deracination, philological bankruptcy, and “the worst tendencies of capitalism” (Damrosch and Spivak 456). The World Literature Pedagogical Spaces seminar addresses these concerns by fostering interdisciplinary collaboration between scholars and teachers in literary studies, comparative literature, and translation. This roundtable’s goal is to diversify and exchange ideas on world literature in theory and practice, while developing sensitivity to translation in cross-cultural literary study and giving equal attention to scholarship, pedagogy, and praxis.
The economic realities facing today’s undergraduate population have led to a proliferation of enrollments into PhD programs. The unfortunate reality is that the majority of these neophyte graduate students are waiting for jobs that are either no longer available or never existed in the first place. Concurrently, for right or wrong, in US colleges and universities at all levels, adjunct and contingent faculty members are no longer in the minority. These part-time and non-tenure track (NTT) instructors outnumber their tenured and tenure-track counterparts at many two-year and four-year institutions.

The research group EL@N from Universidade Aberta will be hosting the first conference on innovation and technology in language teaching as applied to e-learning and b-learning environments. The aim of this initiative is to spark debate on teaching practices and the effect of technology in learning, through a sharing of perspectives and approaches to the theme in different educational contexts.
This panel, part of the NeMLA 2019 conference in Washington, DC from March 21-24, 2019, aims to bring together adjuncts, graduate students, and tenured professors to discuss how we can all work together to fight for a more democratic and just work environment. Topics might include ways to build solidarity to improve working conditions, more democratic ways to share power and responsibility between adjuncts, graduate students, and tenured professors, and ways to increase diversity in the university. Other topics that address solidarity between all workers in the university are welcome.

This roundtable will provide a forum for discussants to describe, analyze, and critique their experiences of teaching writing at specialized institutions. “Specialized institutions” will be interpreted broadly as an institution of higher education that is neither a traditional liberal arts college nor a regional, public university, but instead one that offers a narrower focus through its curriculum. For instance, federal service academies (i.e., West Point or Annapolis), technical colleges (i.e., Georgia Tech, MIT, or Cal Poly), or professional schools (i.e., Bentley University or FIT).

Experiential Learning has been described as an innovative approach to pedagogy in the fields of literature, language, and composition. Proponents argue that integrating Experiential Learning opportunities such as public projects, the production of publications, partnerships with local organizations, volunteering, and field trips into the curriculum enable students to connect what they've learned in the classroom to the wider world. But the significance of the concept of experience in the scholarship on experiential learning, although far from self-evident, remains largely untheorized. In Songs of Experience, Martin Jay points out that in modern philosophy the concept of experience has taken on a range of meanings, sometimes to conflicting ends.
