Proposals for scholarly papers, creative writing presentations, and panels are sought for the sixth in a series of conferences on Mennonite writing in the U.S., Canada, and beyond to be held at Eastern Mennonite University in Harrisonburg, Virginia from Thursday March 29 through Sunday April 1, 2012. The conference will both celebrate and examine this rapidly developing literature across borders on the North American continent and as it is developing world wide. Papers that address the relationship of the artist and communities—solos and harmonies—in ethical and aesthetic dimensions, are particularly welcome. Suggestions include:

The inaugural popular culture conference will be held at the College of St. Joseph, located in Rutland, Vermont, April 13th-14th, 2012.

We are looking for a wide range of popular culture/ cultural studies papers, topics, and panels that explore the enduring figure of the barbarian in Western popular culture. Graduate students, faculty, and independent scholars are encouraged to submit ideas on heroic fantasy, sword-and-sorcery, and other images of barbarians and barbarism.

Proposal deadline: Dec 15th, 2011

Possible paper topics:

Papers addressing filmed adaptations of 19th century novels are invited, from all theoretical perspectives. Books and films both major and less conventional are welcome. What choices confront film-makers in bringing these works to the screen? What features of the novels make them appealing to producers/directors/the public? What effect do modernizations of the texts have on their meaning? How are they used to comment on contemporary culture and society?

In 2012, the 18th- and 19th-Century British Women Writers Conference (BWWC) will commemorate its 20th anniversary by focusing on the theme of "Landmarks."  Rich in both physical and metaphorical significance, landmarks form loci by which we organize history and chart the development of individuals, nations, and cultures. We therefore invite papers that explore how women writers and their texts engage with an ever-changing geography that is both material and abstract. These conference papers should address the people, places, events, and texts that have made their marks on history, and/or the processes and implications of marking, mapping, reading, preserving, overwriting, or erasing.

This panel will be held at the Northeast Modern Language Association (NeMLA) annual convention in Rochester, NY taking place from March 15-18, 2012. We seek papers concerning food in French literary works of the twentieth and twenty-first centuries, from Proust's madeleine to Barthes' steak frites and Nothomb's chocolat blanc. Whether in fiction or non-fiction, in selected passages or entire œuvres, food plays a pivotal role and we welcome submissions that explore this, allowing us to better savor the works as a whole. ICFA 2012: The Monstrous Fantastic

In his seminal article on Beowulf, J.R.R. Tolkien describes the three monsters of the poem as "essential, fundamentally allied to the underlying ideas of the poem." The Fantastic has many similarly integral monsters and monstrosities. But what do these monsters mean? How does the monstrous signify? The Monstrous Fantastic will explore the many creative and cultural constructions of monstrosity in the arts from monsters of ancient times to monsters of the present and future.

Writing with a profound respect for the grandeur and fierceness of the land, these writers are deeply engaged with questions of land use and the nature of community; the conjunction of scientific and spiritual values; and the fragility of wilderness. In addition to published books, materials available for research purposes include correspondence; drafts of manuscripts; research notebooks; diaries and calendars; and photographs, computer files, and film.
