The Mid-Atlantic Popular/American Culture Conference will hold its annual conventio in Baltimore, MD, October 27-29, 2006.

The Middle Ages have and continue to provide a rich mine for retelling, adaptation and updating. Two of the most enduring legends of Western Civilization–King Arthur and Robin Hood–have their origins in the Middle Ages, as well as Beowulf, Joan of Arc, much of fantasy literature, D& D gaming and comic superheroes. In addition, the history of the period continues to fascinate, as seen in films such as Braveheart.

Topics for this area can include, but are not limited to:

Global Beckett, Odense, Denmark October 25-27, 2006.

Papers are invited for the upcoming Global Beckett conference at the
University of Southern Denmark, Odense, October 25-27, 2006, organized by
the Universities of Southern Denmark, Oslo and Aarhus. Along with the
conference there will be an audiovisual Beckett exhibition at
Kunsthallen/Brandts Klaedefabrik in Odense.

Adopting "Global Beckett" as its overall theme, the conference will limit
itself to four subsections that in differing ways function as venues for
exploring the specifically global potential of Samuel Beckett's oeuvre:

Precision and Soul in Modernism
 
In 1922, Robert Musil wrote of a ³miscommunication between the intellect and
the soul.² ³We do not have too much intellect and too little soul², he
continued, ³but too little intellect in matters of the soul². This panel
focuses on the ways in which the intellect and the soul are made actively to
communicate in modernist texts in which the impersonal, the abstract, the
logical and the technological provide a means of accessing the poetic,
mystical, epiphanic and extraordinary aspects of the everyday real.

In summer 2007, the Lincoln Center Festival and The Metropolitan Opera
in New York City will present the first 21st-century Met performance of
Der Ring des Nibelungen, performed by the Kirov Opera under Valery
Gergiev of the Marinsky Theatre in St. Petersburg. In anticipation of
this grand event, this session will offer a timely revaluation of
Wagner's epic operatic cycle and its continuing relevance in an age of
