The Children's Literature Division of the SCMLA invites paper proposals
for the 2006 meeting to be held October 26-28 in Dallas, Texas. In
keeping with the conference theme "Cultural Roundup," this panel
welcomes proposals for papers on the topic of culture with attention to
gender, religion, race, ethnicity, and adolescence.

The six volumes of the Harry Potter series are filled with both fantasy and
things we can describe as fantastic. This session is designed to explore

CFP: Aging and the Young (3/1/06; MLA 12/27-12/30/06)

Aging and the Young: Representations of Old Age in Young Adult and
Children's Literature

What do storybooks teach children about getting old? How do
children's books and books for young adults construct lifetimes on a
personal and a social level? How do such books contribute to ageism,
age positivism, or a multiplicity of views? How could they do things
differently? How can and do books for pre-adults prepare people to
embrace the challenges of getting older throughout the life
cycle? Papers on all aspects of old age in children's and young
adult literature welcomed.

Working Title--Adolescent Medievalism: The Middle Ages Packaged for Children and Young Adults

As stated in our initial CFP, we are interested in abstracts on how the Middle Ages has been and is presented to young people. This focus includes not only literature written specifically for older children and adolescents but also historical fiction, textbooks, and other texts that address the Middle Ages or use medieval motifs. We have many fine abstracts but have noticed specific gaps that need filling.

2007 sees the two-hundredth anniversary of the first publication of two
books that have played distinctively significant roles in the mediation
of Shakespeare for children, and the reception of his works by them:
Charles and Mary Lamb's Tales from Shakespeare, and Henrietta Bowdler's
The Family Shakespeare (revised by her brother Thomas a decade later).
As guest-editors of a cluster of essays in the December 2006 issue of
the new Routledge journal Shakespeare, we wish to take this anniversary
as an opportunity to reflect on some of the meanings and consequences of
Shakespeare's global travels through the cultures of childhood over the
last two hundred years.

Franklin Burroughs, author and conservationist, has been added to the
program of featured speakers for the Fourth NEW-CUE Writers' Conference
and Workshop in honor of Rachel Carson in Boothbay Harbor, Maine, in
June, 2006. Burroughs' work has been included in publications such as
the Kenyon Review, Harper's Magazine, The American Scholar and the
Georgia Review, and he has won critical acclaim for his two books Billy
Watson's Croker Sack and Horry and the Waccamaw.

Panel or a roundtable on love potions in Harry Potter, especially on
their importance in *Half Blood Prince.* Short presentations sought
on different aspects of Love Potions. Examples might be Love Potion
Ethics, Love Potion Mechanics, how love potions in HP relate to
"real" historical/cultural love spells and potions, and Love Potions
and the fandom (aka "shipping.")
