  "Angry Young (Wo)Men": Theatrical Violence as Ethical Debate

In late 1995, two significant events changed the theatrical landscape:
John Osborne (Look Back in
Anger) died, and Sarah Kane's play Blasted premiered at the Royal Court
Theatre in London. The timing
was somewhat serendipitous—as one of the original "Angry Young Men"
left this world, one of the "New
Brutalists" made her mark on it.

This panel seeks papers and presentations that investigate the cultural
and political effects and affects
of violent drama. What can be defined as violence—and what is its
purpose? How have particular plays
rewritten the genre or exploded dramatic boundaries and conventions?
How has theatrical decorum
changed?

Possible topics include, but are not limited to: Revenge Tragedy,
Absurdism, In-Yer-Face Theatre, Epic
Theatre, and Burlesque.

Please plan a 15 minute presentation. Submit title and 300 word
abstracts, with name, university
