“Why Study Women’s Poetry?”
A One-Day Conference at St. Francis College, 180 Remsen Street, Brooklyn,

Call for Papers

Decades after feminist critics began considering women’s poetry as a genre
separate from poetry written by men, the debate continues as to whether we
should study poetry according to the gender of the writer.

This conference will explore the question “Why Study Women’s Poetry?” by
examining (even problematizing) the ways in which women’s poetry has been
studied as a genre separate from men’s poetry. Papers on any and all
aspects of the study of women’s poetry are welcome; those submitting
proposals are encouraged to think broadly about the topic.

Some possible areas of inquiry are:
• Is “Stealing the Language” still necessary?
• Does How to Suppress Women’s Writing still apply?
• The Witch vs. the Prophet
• The Hacker Question: women using “male” forms
• “Confessional” Poetry
• Should We Study Women’s Poetry Separately?
• Male/Female, Female/Female Literary Friendships
• Body of Work: Physical Presence in Poetry
• Mother Nature vs. Manifest Destiny
• Biology is Destiny/Society is All
• Are Shakespeare’s Sisters Alive and Well Today?
• Male versus Female Language

Please submit proposals of no more than 500 words to the conference Chair,
Wendy Galgan, at wgalgan_at_stfranciscollege.edu.

Deadline for proposals is December 15, 2007.

The conference registration fee is $30.00. This includes morning coffee,
lunch, and the evening wine and cheese reception. To download a
