Women and Novels at Late Century, 1770-1815

Original critical essays are solicited for a collection assessing and
addressing the issues, intersections, and shared generic conventions of
novels by or about women at late century both in America and in Britain
between the years 1770 and 1815. The volume seeks to chart and investigate
the connections that have been made between British and American women’s
fiction. Some questions the editors seek to explore: How do women writers
at late century explode novelistic conventions? How do they speak to each
other, even (or especially) across transatlantic boundaries? How do women’s
novels at the close of the eighteenth century and at the beginning of the
nineteenth century recycle old themes, retell similar stories, and explore
the “woman question”? What political questions are being raised by women
novelists of this period? Are texts by American women substantively
different, generically similar, thematically opposed to British women’s
texts? Are the boundaries or categories of female subjectivity more or
less established by earlier women writers threatened, widened, or narrowed
by later texts by women?

This book aims to broaden the discussion of transatlantic women and novels,
particularly later in the century, and also aims at bridging the gap
imposed by the Atlantic, to gain a better sense of how women authors were
speaking to each other, both through their writings and through their silences.
