The Great War and English Studies

full name / name of organization:
Department of English, University of Dhaka

The First World War was a truly momentous event. The rest of the 20th century would be shaped by this war and its consequence, the Second World War. The years 1914-1918 impacted decisively not only on the politics of anti-colonial resistance but also on the arts; in fact, the nascent movement of modernism gained considerable impetus because of the war. The First World War produced an unprecedented magnitude of devastation that left in its trail a frenetic search for new registers necessitated by the collapse of great truths. The Age of Empire had given way to automation, experimentation, and new schemas of drift and defamiliarization. A hundred years on, World War I still remains relevant and continues to offer us newer trajectories and scope for reflection.

The English Department of the University of Dhaka would like to commemorate the First World War in its centenary year by holding an international conference that is designed to examine its consequences for world literature. Papers on (not necessarily restricted to) the following topics are invited:

• The Great War and Modernism
• Violence and the Great War
• Women and War Writing
• War in Film and Literature
• Memory, Trauma and World War I Literature
• The War Poets
• Reading the First World War Postcolonially
